In the extensive GMC Sierra 2009 engine range, only one power unit is a V6 configuration. With a displacement of 4.3 liters, it produces 195 hp. All other engines are V8s, with displacements ranging from 4.8 to 6.2 liters. Accordingly, their power figures fit into a fairly wide range – from 295 to 403 hp. But the largest displacement engine of the Sierra is a 6.6-liter Duramax turbo diesel unit with 365 hp. The engines can work paired with either a 4-speed or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

General Motors also produces a hybrid version of the Sierra pickup with a total power of the powertrain of 332 hp at 5100 rpm and a torque of 367 Nm at 4100 rpm.

In some markets, the GMC Sierra is sold under the name Chevrolet Silverado.
